Osun Election: Armed Security Operatives Blockade Assembly Speaker’s Residence
OSOGBO, NIGERIA — Heavily armed security personnel have reportedly surrounded and sealed off the private residence of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, amid the ongoing Osun State governorship election.
The alarming development was disclosed in an official security alert released on Saturday morning by Pelumi Olajengbesi, the Spokesperson for The Imole Campaign Council (TICC).
According to the campaign council, everyone inside the Speaker’s residence has effectively been locked down and prevented from leaving the premises.
Total Communications Blackout from Police Authorities
The TICC stated that it remains unclear whether the heavy security presence is aimed at providing protection or executing a restrictive operation, as official channels have gone completely silent.
Efforts by the campaign council to get clarification from top law enforcement officials deployed for the election have yielded no results.
The group revealed that calls placed to the publicly available official contact lines of the Commissioner of Police for the election and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police for the election were left unanswered.
Furthermore, the designated phone number for the Police Situation Room was found to be switched off.
Calls for Calm Amid Intimidation Fears
The incident has triggered anxiety across the state on a crucial election day where voters are electing their next governor. The campaign council has called on relevant security heads to urgently break their silence and clarify the exact purpose of the deployment. “On this Election Day, the people of Osun State deserve an atmosphere free from fear and intimidation,” Olajengbesi said in the statement. “Security deployments must inspire confidence and protect the integrity of the electoral process.”
The TICC urged residents of Osun State to remain peaceful, calm, and law-abiding as they wait for an official response from the security agencies, while insisting that voters must be allowed to exercise their democratic rights without interference.
Neither the Osun State Police Command nor the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued an official statement regarding the situation at the Speaker’s home at the time of filing this report.
