Cristiano Ronaldo Suspended by Portugal as FA Opens ‘Urgent’ Disciplinary Probe
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has officially opened an urgent disciplinary investigation into national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo, placing the veteran forward under an active provisional suspension.
In a formal statement released on October 10, 2026, the federation confirmed that its Non-Professional Section deliberated on October 9 to review incidents reported on October 7.
“Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of establishment, the non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined and the urgent nature was attributed to the process,” the FPF statement read.
The directive effectively bars the 41-year-old Al-Nassr striker from international selection while the Disciplinary Investigation Commission reviews the case.
The disciplinary crisis stems from a dramatic international window during the UEFA Nations League. Tensions boiled over ahead of Portugal’s fixture against Denmark when Ronaldo abruptly walked out of the national team’s training camp without authorization.
The fallout was ignited by a direct dispute between Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus.
The legendary forward was left on the bench as an unused substitute during a 2-1 victory over Norway. Ronaldo later expressed intense frustration, accusing Jesus of breaking explicit promises regarding his guaranteed playing time and failing to clarify the situation publicly during media briefings. Feeling slighted, the captain abandoned the squad entirely.
Following his exit, Ronaldo issued a lengthy public statement acknowledging his mistake. He apologized to his teammates and Portuguese supporters, admitting that his actions were unacceptable and explicitly stating that the federation should punish him without leniency.
He has, however, emphasized that he has no intention of retiring from international football.
Under Article 160 of the FPF disciplinary regulations, an unjustified abandonment of national team duties by a called-up player is a severe infraction. Ronaldo now faces a potential suspension ranging from 15 days to six months, alongside an administrative fine.
Because the federation has officially labeled the dossier as “urgent,” a final verdict regarding the definitive length of his ban is expected in the coming weeks.
