Cristiano Ronaldo Reveals He Approved Jorge Jesus’ Appointment as Portugal Coach
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has provided a firsthand account of the events leading to his current fallout with national team manager Jorge Jesus.
In a statement posted on his social media accounts, Ronaldo disclosed that he was heavily involved in the transition process after the 2026 World Cup.
Despite planning his international retirement, Ronaldo says he was urged to continue by the FPF President, who actively sought his endorsement before appointing Jesus.
The relationship began to fracture over squad dynamics and player management. Ronaldo rejected a proposal that would allow him to bypass traveling for away matches, insisting on fulfilling his duties as captain alongside his teammates.
The tipping point occurred ahead of the UEFA Nations League match in Norway. Despite being told he would be rested, Ronaldo was asked on matchday to prepare for a 30-minute appearance. After spending the second half warming up, Ronaldo was never substituted onto the pitch.
The forward expressed deep frustration, concluding that the manager went back on his explicit verbal agreement.
