Russia vs Nigeria: Super Eagles and Russia Gear Up for Friendly Clash in Nizhny Novgorod
Russia and Nigeria’s national football teams wrapped up their final preparations on Monday ahead of their highly anticipated international friendly at the historic Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.
During their final pre-match training sessions, players from both squads were seen sharpening their skills with dribbling exercises, keepie-uppie drills, and tactical simulations.
Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, expressed excitement about the fixture, viewing it as a prime opportunity for his squad to test themselves against high-caliber opposition. Chelle also touched on a personal connection, highlighting the positive relationship between Russia and Mali, his mother’s homeland.
“I’m happy to be here. For me, this is a good country,” Chelle stated. “We have the opportunity to play against a great national team. Once again, we can show what we can do. I hope these young players play the best game of their lives tomorrow.”
The Russian camp shared equal enthusiasm for the matchup. Midfielder Alexei Batrakov praised the Nizhny Novgorod facilities and promised an exciting performance for the supporters. “It’s a good stadium. We hope to see some new fans. We’ll try to win for them and show some good football,” Batrakov noted.
His teammate, midfielder Matvei Kislyak, fondly recalled the stadium’s legacy as a host venue for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. “It’s always a pleasure to play at them, especially when representing the Russian national team,” Kislyak added.
The international friendly marks only the second time the two footballing nations have faced each other. Their inaugural encounter on June 6, 2025, ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
