Manchester United on the Brink of Collapse; Liverpool Edge Past In-Form Brighton
Manchester United are on the brink of a total collapse after slumping to a humiliating 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth.
Following a string of poor results—including Tuesday’s 4-1 thrashing by Italian side Como in Europe—Sunday’s home fixture was seen as a crucial chance at redemption. Instead, it turned out to be the exact opposite.
Manager Michael Carrick started the match with several key players, including captain Bruno Fernandes, on the bench.
However, his gamble failed to pay off as United struggled to control the game from the outset. Rayan opened the scoring for the visitors in the 38th minute, and Marcus Tavernier doubled the lead before the break. Evanilson then completed the rout in the 71st minute, compounding the misery for the hosts.
Carrick and his players were loudly booed by the home fans at the final whistle. Frustration continues to pile up for the squad, who now languish in 16th place on the table, while Bournemouth climbs to 13th.
In other fixtures, Liverpool have climbed to 4th position following a hard-fought 2-0 win over 3rd-placed Brighton & Hove Albion. The home side put on a disciplined defensive masterclass to keep Brighton’s rampaging attack at bay, with Barcelona loanee Ronald Araújo turning in another impressive performance in the backline.
Liverpool now sit on 16 points, five points adrift of league leaders Manchester City.
Elsewhere, Newcastle secured a 2-0 away victory at Crystal Palace, Hull and Brentford played out a 1-1 draw, while Sunderland and Leeds ended the game goalless.
