An Emotional Lionel Messi Dedicates 2026 Princesa de Asturias Award to Late Father
Lionel Messi was officially honoured with the prestigious 2026 Princesa de Asturias Award for Sport, receiving a prolonged standing ovation during a deeply moving ceremony in Asturias, Spain.
The Argentine football legend took the stage to accept the accolade, using his acceptance speech to deliver a heartfelt tribute to his late father, Jorge Messi.
Reflecting on the profound meaning behind the recognition, Messi shared how much the award meant to his family and his father’s instrumental role in ensuring he attended the event.
“My father was extremely excited about this award, so I feel proud and happy to receive it,” Messi stated. “We knew it would be difficult because of my match schedule, but he really insisted that we come, spend these days in Asturias, and receive the award.”
Messi emphasized that the honour represents far more than standard sporting accolades, acknowledging its focus on values and legacy rather than just competitive statistics.
“This award goes beyond what you do on the pitch or what I’ve achieved throughout my career—my dad was so proud,” he added. “Honestly, my father was very proud about this recognition… and that’s why I’m sure he’s enjoying it too for me.”
The Princesa de Asturias Awards are among the most celebrated honours in Spain, recognizing scientific, cultural, and social achievements globally.
Messi’s emotional tribute highlighted the deep personal significance of the 2026 sporting recognition following his father’s passing.
