Heavy defeats for United and Spurs; Wins for Everton, Ipswich, Leeds, and Arsenal.

The opening week of the English Premier League came with exciting matchups and upsets. While Arsenal opened the weekend fixture on Friday with a resounding Champions statement win, Manchester United and Spurs started off with the same poor showing of last season.

Newly promoted sides Hull City and Ipswich couldn’t have wished for a better start to life in the premiership with wins against established League sides, while Leeds secured an interesting away win at Forrest.

Same Old Spurs: Brentford Blasts Tottenham 3-0 in Prem Opener

The optimism of a new season evaporated in just ninety minutes for Tottenham Hotspur.

Visiting the Gtech Community Stadium, Spurs looked plagued by the exact same defensive frailty and lack of clinical edge that derailed their previous campaign.

Brentford capitalised ruthlessly on these familiar errors, pinning the visitors back early and refusing to let them breathe.

The breakthrough came via a lightning-fast counter-attack, exposing Tottenham’s high defensive line.

By halftime, Brentford held a commanding two-goal cushion, leaving the traveling fans in stunned silence.

Tottenham attempted to structurally regroup after the break but lacked creative spark in the final third. A late, clinical finish from Brentford sealed the 3-0 rout, leaving Spurs manager with massive tactical questions to answer ahead of the midweek fixtures.

Manchester United’s Old Nightmare Return

Manchester United struggled to shed off their nightmares of last season, going down 0-2 to newly promoted Hull City.

Although the heavily favored visitors, under the guidance of manager Michael Carrick, controlled a massive 72% of possession, they lacked fluidity in their game.

The away end fell into stunned silence in the 17th minute when an early corner fell to Semi Ajayi, who confidently smashed it into the net. Hull City doubled down on their physical dominance just before the break, when Nobel Mendy rose highest to meet a swinging free-kick, nodding past the helpless goalkeeper.

No Way Through

Carrick rang the tactical changes at halftime, turning to heavy-hitters like Marcus Rashford and Benjamin Šeško to spark a comeback. However, the resilient home side defended with ultimate resolve, making history by securing their first-ever Premier League opening day win over United.

Results from Other EPL Games:
Everton 2-0 Crystal Palace
Ipswich 2-1 Sunderland
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Leeds
Arsenal 3-0 Coventry (Friday)
