‘Profoundly Embarrassing’: Peter Obi Reacts to President Asking Foreign Court to Hide Records

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the state of the nation, criticizing the political class for prioritizing personal ambition over national integrity.

In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, Obi addressed the ongoing controversies surrounding the past records and educational credentials of the nation’s leadership, calling the current situation “profoundly embarrassing.”

A Call for Accountability and Transparency

Obi targeted President Bola Tinubu’s legal battles aimed at concealing personal history from public scrutiny, arguing that true leadership requires the courage to confront one’s past.

“It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly records relating to matters of legitimate public interest,” Obi stated.

He emphasized that public officials must possess the humility to acknowledge past mistakes, offer candid explanations, and apologize where necessary. According to Obi, shielding uncomfortable aspects of history from the public only weakens a leader’s moral authority.

The Impact on Nigeria’s Youth

The former governor raised specific concerns regarding unresolved questions about foundational education—including primary and secondary schooling credentials. He argued that these matters should be clarified openly rather than being fought out in judicial chambers.

Obi highlighted the negative precedent this sets for Nigeria’s population of over 200 million people. He maintained that the presidency must serve as a beacon of integrity, accountability, and ethical governance.

“An imperfect past is part of the human condition,” Obi wrote. “What matters is the willingness to confront it with humility, honesty, and deep apology, to make amends where necessary, and, when circumstances so demand, to place the interests of the nation above personal ambition.”

Reaffirming his unwavering loyalty to Nigeria, Obi stated that he has never sought foreign citizenship, even when it became a popular trend. He reminded the political class that terms in office are temporary, while the moral standards they set leave a lasting impact on future generations.
