Cod Army Conquers Champions: Fleetwood Town Stun Arsenal in Historic Cup Upset
Fleetwood Town pulled off a major upset in League Cup history on Tuesday night, dumping reigning Premier League champions Arsenal in a dramatic penalty shootout at Highbury Stadium.
The fourth-tier side, currently sitting 18th in League Two, held a highly rotated Arsenal side to a 1-1 draw in normal time before triumphing 5-3 on penalties to book a fairytale spot in the quarterfinals.
The hosts shocked the visitors in the 21st minute when Fulham loanee Aaron Loupalo-Bi outmuscled teenage defender Marli Salmon to poke home the opening goal past debutant goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
Struggling for fluidity, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta introduced heavyweights Martin Ødegaard and Ben White at halftime. The changes paid immediate dividends as Viktor Gyökeres leveled the scoring in the 50th minute, squeezing in his first goal of the season.
Despite a dominant second half where the Gunners outshot Fleetwood 15-2, their momentum was shattered in the 85th minute. Arsenal’s 16-year-old wonderkid Max Dowman was shown a straight red card by referee Michael Salisbury for kicking out in retaliation following an aggressive slide tackle, leaving the visitors down to 10 men.
With no extra time in the early rounds of the EFL Cup, the match went straight to a shootout. Fleetwood were flawless from the spot, converting all five of their penalties.
The decisive blow came when Arsenal’s £75 million summer signing, Bruno Guimarães, saw his spot-kick saved by Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch. Teenage defender Conor Haughey then stepped up to smash home the winning penalty, triggering a wild pitch invasion on the Fylde coast.
