Harry Kane and Alexia Putellas Win 2026 Ballon d’Or in Historic London Ceremony
LONDON — In a historic night that brought the crown of world football back to British soil for the first time in a generation, England captain Harry Kane was awarded the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or at a glittering ceremony at the London Palladium.
The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker topped a fierce field of global talent, edging out Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona’s teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal, who finished second and third, respectively.
Kane’s triumph marks the first time an English player has claimed the prestigious golden ball since Michael Owen won the honour 25 years ago in 2001.
The star-studded event, hosted by Thierry Henry and Kate Scott, also served as a historic milestone for the trophy itself, marking the first time the Ballon d’Or gala has ever been staged outside of France.
A Record-Breaking Campaign
Kane’s coronation follows a breathtaking individual season. During the official evaluation window spanning August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026, the clinical frontman racked up a staggering 73 goals and 8 assists across 65 appearances for club and country. His prolific form secured a domestic double for Bayern Munich and propelled England deep into the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Earlier in the evening, Kane also collected the Gerd Müller Trophy as the season’s leading marksman.
“Wow, I’m almost speechless,” an emotional Kane told the audience upon accepting the trophy. “My journey wasn’t straightforward. I wasn’t a kid who went straight to the top. I had to experience the downs, navigate multiple loan moves, and fight my way to be the very best right now.”
Putellas Claims Historic Third Title
Sharing the London spotlight was Spanish midfielder Alexia Putellas, who captured her third Ballon d’Or Féminin.
Putellas, who completed a high-profile move from FC Barcelona to the Women’s Super League side London City Lionesses this summer, previously won the award in 2021 and 2022. Her victory ties her with international teammate Aitana Bonmatí for the most women’s golden balls in football history.
Her triumph caps a remarkable comeback following years of grueling rehabilitation from a career-threatening anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear.
“Self-belief and the unconditional support of my family and Barcelona made this moment possible,” Putellas noted during a poignant acceptance speech.
Pre-Gala Blunder
The historic evening did not escape controversy. Hours before the doors opened at the Palladium, a severe technical glitch on the official Ballon d’Or website briefly published three conflicting articles simultaneously declaring Kane, Mbappé, and Yamal as individual winners. Though the pages were rapidly scrubbed by web editors, the leak accurately foreshadowed the final men’s podium structure.
