Football, Money and Power: The Mbappe vs China Controversy

Social media is a fascinating playground, but the rapid integration of generative AI into video content is making it increasingly volatile.

Much of the AI-generated content targets political figures, pop stars, and elite athletes. Occasionally, these distinct worlds collide, transforming a light-hearted internet joke into an international diplomatic crisis.

This is precisely the reality confronting French football star Kylian Mbappé, alongside Real Madrid and La Liga. All three entities have been forced into damage control, issuing public apologies to China following an uproar over an ill-judged comment by the player.

To provide context, Mbappé has long been the subject of internet memes portraying him as a controlling military dictator. The joke originally traced back to his time at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where critics blamed his “princely” aura for the short tenures of several managers.

Ironically, PSG’s fortunes shifted dramatically following Mbappé’s departure for Spain. Under Luis Enrique, a revitalized PSG finally captured the elusive UEFA Champions League title in 2025, repeating the feat with back-to-back European trophies in 2026.

It was a crowning achievement for club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who had invested billions since Qatar Sports Investments assumed ownership in 2011.

While PSG flourished as a cohesive unit, Real Madrid endured early-season chemistry struggles, giving critics fresh ammunition to revive the “dictator” memes. While Mbappé previously laughed off the jokes as lighthearted, the banter turned radioactive during a recent behind-the-scenes clip from the French talk show The Bridge.

When asked about his favourite meme, Mbappé laughed at an image of his face superimposed onto the body of Mao Zedong, offhandedly referring to the founding father of modern China as “some guy—I think he’s a Chinese dictator.”

In China, where the historical legacy of Mao Zedong is fiercely protected, the backlash was swift and severe. Major Chinese corporations dropped the player with zero tolerance for remarks offending national sentiment. Beverage giant Dongpeng, alongside dairy heavyweights Mengniu and Milkground, immediately terminated their commercial relationships with the forward.

The financial fallout extended far beyond Mbappé’s personal portfolio. Sports commerce relies entirely on global scale, and China represents a cornerstone market. Before the terminations, Mbappé’s individual Chinese endorsements brought in an estimated 50 million yuan ($7 million to $8 million) annually. Real Madrid’s broader commercial footprint in China is valued at over $100 million per year, comprising up to 15% of its global marketing revenue.

Meanwhile, La Liga risks severe long-term damage to its media rights deal in the region, which is also worth over $100 million annually.

Recognizing the immense stakes, Mbappé quickly issued a formal apology: “My comment was ill-judged, and I now understand that it hurt many people in China and in Chinese communities around the world. I apologise to everyone my words have upset. This was absolutely not my intention. I have deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I am sincerely sorry.”

Real Madrid soon published its own official statement: “Real Madrid C.F. wishes to express its apologies to the Chinese people for any distress that may have been caused by the recent remarks made by our player, Kylian Mbappé. Our club holds deep respect for China—its history, its culture, and its citizens…”

With state broadcaster China Media Group (CMG) enforcing a television blackout on La Liga broadcasts and scrubbing Mbappé’s likeness from state media, La Liga President Javier Tebas met with the Chinese ambassador to Spain to defuse the situation. The league issued a statement regretting the individual action and reinforcing its decades-long relationship of trust and cooperation with China.

This controversy is a reminder of the immense financial forces governing modern sports. In an interconnected digital economy, a single offhand comment by an athlete can instantly cross oceans, collapse corporate partnerships, and disrupt multi-million-dollar broadcasting networks overnight.
