Nigeria Launches Zero-Rated Initiative to Remove Data Costs for Learners
ABUJA, NIGERIA—The Nigerian government is removing all roadblocks to quality education at the basic level with the launch of a landmark digital intervention programme designed to make internet data affordable for students.
This will be done through approved educational platforms across the country.
The Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content in Nigeria was unveiled by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The policy targets millions of learners in senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
Breaking Down Barriers to Education
Speaking at the launch event, Dr. Alausa emphasized that the initiative aims to ensure that the high cost of internet connectivity no longer denies any Nigerian child their right to quality learning.
“This is a decisive step toward ensuring that poverty, geography, and the cost of connectivity no longer determine who gets access to quality education,” Alausa stated.
The Minister highlighted that by eliminating financial barriers to digital resources, mobile devices, tablets, and computers will effectively transform into virtual classrooms and libraries. The shift is expected to heavily benefit students from low-income households and remote communities where conventional educational infrastructure remains severely limited.
Part of a Broader Sector Renewal
This zero-rated data initiative is a core component of a larger national strategy known as the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI). According to the minister, NESRI places data management and digitalization at the absolute center of Nigeria’s academic ecosystem.
To streamline and optimize how education is planned and delivered, the ministry is deploying three foundational digital pillars. These include the Learner Identification Number (LIN), Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), and Digital Nigeria Education Management Information System (DNEMIS).
These data tracking platforms is expected to strengthen administrative capacity and serve as a benchmark of the country’s ongoing digital transformation with the goal of reaching learners and measuring upgrade classroom outcomes.
