Kenya to Host European Giants FC Bayern Munich and Ajax in Nairobi for Historic Stadium Opening
European football giants FC Bayern Munich and Ajax are set to clash in a historic friendly match in Nairobi on 5 January 2027.
The blockbuster fixture will serve as the grand opening of Kenya’s new national arena, the Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City.
The high-profile match is designed as a continent-wide celebration of football, building major anticipation for the summer 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The upcoming AFCON will make history as the first edition co-hosted by three nations—Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania—marking the tournament’s return to East Africa for the first time in over 50 years.
For FC Bayern, the trip represents a major milestone in their global outreach. While the German club has traditionally focused its international pre-season tours on the Americas and Asia, this fixture marks a dedicated effort to engage directly with their massive African fanbase.
“FC Bayern has millions of fantastic fans in Africa with whom we feel a close connection – it’s a continent with a huge passion for football,” said Rouven Kasper, FC Bayern board member for marketing and sales. “Now we have a new opportunity to further strengthen our connection with our fans in Africa too, to allow people to experience FC Bayern first-hand and to underline our club’s international appeal.”
The match will also feature plenty of familiar star power, with former Bundesliga standouts Marc-André Ter Stegen, Thilo Kehrer, and Julian Brandt expected to feature for the Dutch record champions, Ajax.
Fans unable to attend the historic match in Nairobi will be able to catch the action live. The game will be broadcast free-to-air on ProSieben and streamed simultaneously on FC Bayern TV PLUS, the club’s pay-per-view streaming service.
