2027: Makinde ‘Qualified to Lead Nigeria’—Peter Obi
ABUJA, NIGERIA—The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, made an unexpected appearance at the official commissioning of Governor Seyi Makinde’s presidential campaign office in Abuja on Monday.
The high-profile visit by the opposition leader has sparked intense conversations across Nigeria’s political landscape, signaling a potential shift toward cross-party alliances and a unified front against the ruling government.
‘He is Qualified to Be President’
Addressing the crowd, Obi openly praised the Oyo State Governor, explicitly endorsing his competence and capability to govern the nation.
“You have a candidate who is contesting for president today, my dear brother Makinde,” Obi said. “Number one, is he qualified to be president? Yes.”
The NDC candidate emphasized that his presence at the rival campaign office was a deliberate effort to pioneer a new era of politics free from traditional enmity and bitterness.
A Call for Unity Against Economic Hardship
Obi stressed that Nigeria’s deepening economic challenges require political leaders to look past partisan divides. He called for a collective national effort to address widespread poverty and food insecurity.
“Our people are hungry, our people are poor,” Obi lamented. “Whoever wins genuinely from a free, fair, and credible election, all of us want to work together to save this country from collapse.”
He added that political disputes should focus on delivering social welfare rather than personal vendettas. “We don’t want politics of quarrel, politics of disagreement. Let our quarrel be to feed our people, to pull our people out of [poverty].”
Demanding a Level Playing Field
Reiterating his long-standing vision for an egalitarian society, Obi stated that his solidarity visit highlights a shared commitment to building a “New Nigeria” where merit triumphs over political connections.
“What we agreed today is to show you that, for us, it is not about desperation. We want the people of Nigeria to make their choice… we should all come together to build a new Nigeria,” Obi stated. “We want a Nigeria where a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody.”
Political analysts suggest that Obi’s unexpected show of solidarity at Makinde’s campaign headquarters could rewrite the political playbook as coalitions begin to take shape for the upcoming presidential race.
