2027 Election: YPP Presidential Candidate Withdraws From Race Due to Family Pressure
ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has confirmed that its 2027 presidential candidate, Anita Zugwai-Chukwu, has officially and voluntarily withdrawn from the upcoming presidential race.
In a statement issued by YPP National Publicity Secretary, Wale Martins, the party revealed that Zugwai-Chukwu stepped down following extensive family consultations regarding Nigeria’s prevailing security situation.
Voluntarily Stepping Down Over Security Risks
Zugwai-Chukwu, who was unanimously elected at the YPP’s 3rd Elective National Convention and Presidential Primary on May 30, 2026, is said to have communicated her exit in an official letter dated August 12, 2026.
According to the party, her family raised serious concerns over the extensive travel, public exposure, and nationwide movements required during a rigorous presidential campaign.
The YPP emphasized that her decision was entirely voluntary. “Any contrary narrative claiming coercion, intimidation, pressure, or undue influence from the party or any individual is completely unfounded and should be disregarded,” Martins stated.
Search for Female Replacement Fails
Following her exit, the opposition party attempted to sustain its gender-inclusive agenda by exploring every available option to fill the vacancy with another qualified female aspirant. However, the party disclosed that these efforts ultimately proved abortive.
Peter Agada Emerges as New Flagbearer
Following the unsuccessful bid to field another female candidate, the YPP conducted a Special Presidential Substitution Primary on Friday, August 21, 2026.
During the exercise, Peter Agada was duly affirmed and elected by party members as the new YPP presidential flagbearer for the 2027 general election.
The YPP concluded by praising Zugwai-Chukwu’s courage, sacrifice, and dedication to progressive ideals, stressing that Agada’s emergence does not diminish her immense contributions or achievements within the party.
