NIGERIA — Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democrat Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has officially unveiled Obidient Connect, a digital citizen-led platform designed to crowdsource campaign funds and structure his nationwide grassroots movement.

In a strategic twist to safeguard electoral integrity, the platform also announced plans to recruit retired personnel from the Nigerian Armed Forces, Police, and intelligence agencies to serve as “Vote Protect Marshals” on election day.

‘Obidient Connect’: Structure Over Passion

In a video broadcast introducing the platform, Obi described Obidient Connect as a strategic tool to transform the raw passion of his followers into a formidable political structure. “It is a tool to give structure to a passion,” Obi stated. “A way to connect, organize, and stand together polling unit by polling unit, and ward by ward.”

The digital architecture is powered by the Big Tenth Coalition, a prominent pro-Obi political bloc led by renowned political economy expert Professor Pat Utomi, alongside Dr. Yunusa Tanko and other key leaders of the Obidient movement.

The primary objective is to ensure absolute transparency and guarantee that every vote counts in the 2027 cycle.

Global Crowdfunding and the US ‘Naija We Can’ Partnership

A breakdown of the Obidient Connect portal reveals a user-friendly interface featuring two prominent action buttons: a green “Sign Up” button for volunteer mobilization and an orange “Donate” button for financial contributions.

According to the website’s manifesto, it functions as Nigeria’s premier citizen-led civic engagement technology platform, uniting domestic voters and the Nigerian diaspora.

To maintain strict compliance with international and domestic financial regulations, the platform’s disclaimer notes that “Naija We Can”—a registered non-profit organization in the United States—has been designated as the official financial partner for diaspora donations. The website clarifies the allocation of foreign funding: “Diaspora donations are used strictly for activities such as civic education, election transparency, grassroots organising, digital infrastructure, public enlightenment, support of our preferred candidate, and advocacy for good governance.”

Retired Military and Police to Guard Polling Units

In a direct bid to curb electoral malpractice and voter intimidation, Obidient Connect is establishing a nationwide Vote Protection League.

The initiative explicitly calls on retired security veterans to step forward as “Marshals.” These marshals will operate either as paid agents or high-level volunteers.

“Marshals will help coordinate citizen observers, maintain calm around polling units, and support result documentation and reporting,” the platform details.

The movement emphasizes that the discipline, institutional experience, and patriotism of former service personnel will act as a major deterrent against vote rigging, thereby strengthening voter confidence and safeguarding the democratic process.
