Why University Lecturers in Niger State Are Going On Strike
Lapai, Niger State — Academic activities have ground to a halt at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), following the declaration of a total and indefinite strike by the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The union announced the industrial action immediately after an emergency congress, citing the Niger State Government’s failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement.
The indefinite strike follows the expiration of a two-week ultimatum previously served to the state government.
Why IBBUL Lecturers Are on Strike
According to ASUU IBBUL Chairperson, Galadima Bala, the union took the “decision after exhausting all avenues of dialogue with relevant authorities and key stakeholders.
The core issues behind the industrial action include failure by the Niger State Government to enforce critical components of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
While Niger State historically led in adopting national education agreements, at least 16 other state universities have already implemented this specific agreement ahead of them.
Union Open to Talks, Regrets Disruptions
While the strike is effective immediately, the union maintains that the door to negotiation is not entirely shut.
However, he warned that the patience of union members is not infinite, noting that the strike will only be suspended once the government demonstrates concrete actions.
The union expressed regret over the inevitable disruptions the action will cause to students, parents, and other university stakeholders.
