MINNA, NIGER STATE — Armed bandits have killed an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and set his remains ablaze during a surveillance operation in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The Niger State Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Muhammed Abubakar.

The deceased officer has been identified as Assistant Superintendent of Immigration Ibrahim Babagiwa.

According to the command, Babagiwa and an Inspector of Immigration were conducting official surveillance duties on October 6, 2026, along the Tungan Taya–Woko axis when they were ambushed by terrorists at Woko Village.

During the violent assault, Babagiwa lost his life while his colleague sustained severe machete wounds. Despite the injuries, the surviving inspector managed to escape the scene and seek assistance.

Abubakar revealed that the full scale of the tragedy emerged two days later when search teams recovered Babagiwa’s body, which had been burnt by the attackers.

The deceased officer has since been buried according to Islamic rites. The injured inspector is currently hospitalized, in stable condition, and responding to medical treatment.

The NIS Niger State Command reiterated its resolve to secure Nigeria’s international borders, stating that the tragedy would not deter its personnel from tackling irregular migration and combating cross-border security threats.
