Miners’ Deaths: Independent Investigative Panel Commences Sitting in Abuja
ABUJA, NIGERIA — The 10-member Independent Committee of Inquiry tasked with investigating the controversial deaths of 37 detainees in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has formally commenced its sittings.
The 37 deceased individuals were reportedly held by the NSCDC Niger State Command on suspicions relating to illegal mining operations before their sudden deaths on September 17, 2026.
In a press statement released by the committee’s Secretary, Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, it was disclosed that the panel held its inaugural meeting immediately after being sworn in.
During this first session, members formally adopted a strategic work plan to guide the high-stakes investigation.
According to the outlined work plan, the panel will execute physical site visits, interface directly with relevant government apparatuses, and conduct interviews with survivors, suspects, and key individuals possessing material knowledge of the incident.
Concurrently, a dedicated medical team embedded within the committee has already commenced forensic evaluations to conclusively establish the cause, mechanism, and manner of the 37 deaths.
“The Committee reaffirms its commitment to conducting a thorough, fair, transparent, and evidence-based inquiry,” stated Prof. Chiroma, the former Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, who serves alongside panel chairman and retired DSS Deputy Director-General Jonathan Kure.
In its bid to guarantee an unhindered and fully transparent investigation, the Federal Government has already directed the immediate suspension of the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, alongside 20 other personnel responsible for arrest, legal, station, and guard duties during the timeline of the incident. Minister Tunji-Ojo previously underscored that the panel must operate with total autonomy, completely insulated from external pressures or interference.
Moving forward, the committee has extended an appeal to members of the public and civic groups to support its investigative mandate. The panel has resolved to invite formal memoranda from interested individuals and organisations.
Prof. Chiroma noted that detailed guidelines for submissions, alongside dates and venues for physical public presentations, will be formally communicated in due course as the panel continues to provide routine public updates.
