Niger State NSCDC Appoints New Commandant Abdulhamid Kabara Amid Custody Deaths Scandal

Abdulhamid Kabara has officially assumed office as the new Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Niger State Command.

Kabara takes over leadership following the suspension of the former State Commandant, Suberu Aniviye.

The high-profile leadership change comes during a critical crisis for the Niger State Command, following the tragic deaths of 37 suspects who were arrested in connection with illegal mining operations in the state.

In an official statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Abubakar Rabiu Muti, the newly deployed Commandant addressed the situation immediately upon taking charge.

Commitment to Human Rights and Safety in Custody

While addressing officers and stakeholders, Commandant Kabara expressed deep condolences to the families affected by the custody tragedy.

He emphasized a policy shift toward balancing strict law enforcement with the human rights of suspects.

“At a moment like this, beyond arrests, investigations, enforcement, and the fight against illegal mining, we must remember one fundamental truth: every human life matters,” Kabara stated. “The loss of any human life is painful, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families who are mourning at this difficult time.”

The new NSCDC chief stressed that the command’s primary statutory duties—including tackling illegal mining in Niger State—must not compromise safety. He stated that the responsibility to protect society must always align with upholding the dignity, welfare, and safety of individuals held in state custody.

Crackdown on Illegal Mining Continues

Despite the leadership shakeup, the Niger State NSCDC Command maintains that its enforcement operations against economic sabotage and illegal mining sites will continue. However, under Kabara’s new administration, the Command is expected to review its detention and operational safety protocols to prevent future operational tragedies.
