Peter Obi Demands Urgent Probe of Death of 37 Miners in Custody
Outrage and demands for accountability are mounting across the country following a deeply troubling tragedy in Niger State. At least 37 individuals held in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna have died, sparking intense national conversation around human rights and detention conditions.

Reacting to the incident, prominent leader and former presidential candidate Peter Obi issued a strong statement calling for a credible, independent investigation into the Minna NSCDC custody deaths.
Obi emphasized that regardless of the offenses the individuals were suspected of committing, they were human beings whose lives should have been preserved by the state.
“A nation cannot claim to value human life when people can enter government custody alive and emerge dead without immediate, transparent, and credible accountability,” Obi stated.

The tragedy has renewed sharp scrutiny on the state of Nigerian detention facility systems. Human rights advocates argue that overcrowding and poor infrastructure turn detention centers into death traps before due process can take its course.
