23-year-old American Ben Shelton is through to his first even Grand Slam final after pulling off a spectacular comeback to defeat his close friend and compatriot Frances Tiafoe in a thrilling four-set semifinal clash on Friday night.

The match ended 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Remarkably, Shelton’s semi-final win confirms him as the first Black American man to reach the US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972.

His incredible run at the U.S. Open included a dramatic five-set quarterfinal upset over tournament favorite and world number one Carlos Alcaraz.

Shelton meets Germany’s top-seeded Alexander Zverev in the final on Sunday. Zverev advanced by beating Karen Khachanov in the other semifinal clash.

If Shelton emerges victorious in the final, he will become the first American to win a Grand Slam men’s singles title since Andy Roddick’s 2003 win.
