Spain’s interior ministry says over 37,000 migrants who broke through its border in Ceuta have returned to Morocco.
Thousands of migrants were seen in a now-viral video running into the Spanish enclave on Friday.
The surge marks one of the most significant surge in the border crises, which is seen not just as a problem for Spain but the European Union particularly on its southern frontier.
Spanish border police had earlier confirmed that the enclave had been under mounting pressure, intercepting an average of 700 migrants daily prior to this week’s overwhelming rush.
Spain responded by deploying military units alongside heavy police reinforcements to assist overstretched border agents.
While thousands of people managed to briefly breach the boundary, coordinated bilateral efforts quickly reversed the tide, resulting in the swift repatriation of the vast majority of the arrivals.
The spike in crossings highlights deep-seated economic hardships across North Africa and mounting political pressure on the EU’s shared land borders. Spanish authorities continue to maintain a heavy security presence along the perimeter to prevent further mass breaches.
