Flavio Bolsonaro Flees Brazil: Defeated Candidate Lands in Miami Amid Corruption Probe
Defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro and his family have landed at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport on Wednesday morning after fleeing Brazil.
The 45-year-old right-wing senator refused to concede Sunday’s runoff election to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. His sudden departure occurred just as he faced a Supreme Court deadline to surrender his passports.
Following his election defeat, the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered the senator to hand over both his regular and diplomatic passports by noon on Tuesday. Instead, Bolsonaro embarked on a circuitous escape route.
According to Argentine officials and flight data, Bolsonaro, his wife Fernanda, and their two daughters crossed into Argentina via a land border checkpoint late Tuesday night before travelling through Ecuador and ultimately flying to Florida.
The Trump administration approved U.S. visas for Bolsonaro and his family earlier this week, ensuring their legal entry into the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump publicly defended the move on Wednesday, calling the Bolsonaro family “fine people” and labelling the Brazilian election “really strange” and “terrible”.
Allies of the family have indicated that they expect Bolsonaro to seek political asylum.
Legal Jeopardy and Corruption Probes
Flávio Bolsonaro is currently facing heavy scrutiny from Brazil’s Supreme Court. He is under active investigation for corruption, tax evasion, and allegedly using a sports betting company to launder fraudulent deductions taken from government senior citizen pensions. In a separate ongoing case, he is accused of accepting millions of dollars from a disgraced banker.
Bolsonaro currently serves as a federal senator, but his eight-year term is set to expire on January 31, 2027. Losing his seat means losing his special legal jurisdiction, which previously shielded him from being tried by ordinary lower courts, leaving him highly vulnerable to immediate arrest by Brazilian authorities.
The dramatic exit mirrors the actions of his father, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Following his own election loss to Lula da Silva in 2022, the senior Bolsonaro similarly fled to Florida to avoid legal repercussions before eventually returning to Brazil. Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest for attempting a coup after that election defeat.
Flávio Bolsonaro reportedly visited his father’s house arrest residence to receive the passport surrender order just before fleeing the country.
