Brazil Election Results: Lula Defeats Flavio Bolsonaro to Win Fourth Term

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a historic fourth non-consecutive term as President of Brazil, staging a dramatic comeback to defeat Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday’s presidential run-off election.

Official data released by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) confirmed that Lula won 51.79% of the valid votes, narrowly edging out Bolsonaro, who captured 48.21%. The victory marks a complete reversal from the first-round vote on October 4, where Lula had trailed his conservative rival.

“A Victory for Democracy”

Speaking to a jubilant crowd from the Hotel InterContinental in São Paulo, Lula framed his comeback as a triumph for the nation’s institutional integrity.

“I want to thank God and thank you, men and women of this country, for the strength you have shown,” Lula said. “It was not me. I believe these elections were honesty, nationalism, democracy, and the future you want for your children that enabled us to come back.”

During his address, the president-elect launched a scathing, though indirect, critique of his opponent’s campaign strategy, accusing the senator of systemic dishonesty.

“I never imagined, in our country, that a person could lie so much,” Lula stated. “Such brazenness, as if he did not have within him a single cell of humanism. Everything seems fake.”

Legislative Challenges and Polarization Ahead

Despite the celebrations, Lula faces an uphill battle in a deeply polarized nation. The incoming administration will have to navigate a conservative-majority Congress.

Addressing these governance challenges, Lula emphasized his willingness to collaborate across party lines, stating he remains ready to work with legislators and keep the doors to dialogue open regardless of political differences.

The political tension was immediately felt from the capital. Speaking from Brasília, Flávio Bolsonaro announced that he would not recognize the electoral results. The Senator stated he will seek a formal annulment of the election, specifically questioning a court decision that extended polling hours on election day.

Supporters of Bolsonaro have also pointed to his political alignment with U.S. figure Donald Trump as a cornerstone of his international backing.

Regional Ripple Effects

The impact of the election resonated quickly across Latin America. In neighboring Argentina, members of Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT) and local sympathizers gathered in central Buenos Aires to celebrate the outcome alongside Argentine political and trade union organizations.

For regional supporters, the election was viewed as a critical geopolitical turning point.

“Today we have witnessed Lula’s last election as president,” said Luisa, a Brazilian voter celebrating in Buenos Aires. “I feel very happy about his victory. It is a victory for all Latin America. This brings hope to people here in Argentina, to Chileans, and to Peruvians who are being stifled by this extreme right.”

Other demonstrators echoed fears regarding Bolsonaro’s refusal to concede, viewing it as a predictable strategy.

“I think it is to be expected that he will come out and say that the elections are not correct,” noted voter Felipe Fernández. “It seems to me that this is his tactic, his last throw of the dice. His last attempt is to rely on Trump, and that worries me a little.”

Lula’s victory solidifies a renewed leftward shift for the region’s largest economy, even as the country braces for a tense transition period amid Bolsonaro’s legal challenges to the vote.
