Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has announced plans to launch the largest Initial Public Offering (IPO) in African history for his landmark refinery before taking the company public in the United States.

In an interview with CNN, the billionaire businessman revealed that overwhelming global demand is driving the highly anticipated listing, which will allow citizens across the continent to own a stake in the massive energy infrastructure.

He also reversed his previous stance against building more refineries, hinting at a major expansion into Kenya backed by a highly specialized execution team.

A Historic Listing For Every African

The upcoming IPO is set to rewrite financial records across the continent. Dangote expressed immense confidence in the upcoming public offering, highlighting unprecedented investor appetite.

“This is going to be the biggest IPO ever in the history of Africa, and I hope definitely it will be overly subscribed. The demand is very, very overwhelming,” he said.

Dangote emphasized that democratizing ownership of the mega-refinery is a core priority for the listing.
“The IPO is going to open, and each and every African will have the opportunity to have a stake in this great refinery.”

Global Ambitions and U.S. Markets

The African IPO serves as the foundational step for an even larger global play. Dangote outlined a phased expansion roadmap that culminates in a major listing on Wall Street once production capacity more than doubles.
“After we have gone to 1.4 million barrels per day in the next two and a half to three years, we will now list in the U.S., and I believe a lot of other people too will join because I believe by that time we are going to be the biggest refinery in the history of the world with a massive petrochemical complex, and I think it is going to be something that people would definitely rush to buy,” he explained.

Addressing concerns over the economics of sustainability and current uncertainties in the global oil market, Dangote projected dominance in refined product exports. According to him, “When we are here, we will be major suppliers of jet fuel to the world market, not only in Europe. We will be the biggest in terms of gas oil (diesel) in the global market.”

The Kenya Expansion and Strategic U-Turn

Despite previously expressing deep regrets over the immense challenges of building the 650,000 barrels-per-day facility in Nigeria, Dangote has completely reversed his position. Armed with proprietary technical expertise, the conglomerate is now actively planning an aggressive expansion into East Africa, focusing on Kenya.

“I told you that look, I will never ever attempt to build a refinery again. But right now, to tell you the truth, I now understand how it is, and we have the best team in the world to deliver. We have a team that is very, very solid,” Dangote said with renewed confidence.

The industrialist concluded by asserting that his company has developed a unique operational blueprint that no other global competitor can match.
“This is something that we are taking as our own patent. I don’t believe, and I repeat I don’t believe there’s any company today on earth that can deliver 700,000 barrels refinery per day and we now have the techniques, we know how to do it and we will deliver on schedule and on course.”
