Benue Mass Burial: Outrage Grows as 15 Victims of Suspected Herder Attack Laid to Rest

Grief and outrage have erupted in Benue State following a solemn mass burial for 15 victims of a devastating dawn attack in Otukpo Local Government Area.

The victims—including women and children—were killed on Tuesday, July 28, when suspected armed herders invaded the agrarian community of Efeyi-Utikpi in the Ugboju District.

Agony in Efeyi-Utikpi as Generations Laid to Rest

White caskets laid end-to-end across an open field presented a tragic yet familiar sight for residents of Benue State. Families gathered in their hundreds to say final goodbyes to loved ones snatched away in the violent early-morning raid.

The casualties spanned generations. Attackers targeted vulnerable residents, destroyed homes, and left a trail of bloodshed across the farming community.

For the grieving families, the funeral service offered little comfort. Instead, it amplified deep-seated anger over relentless, recurring attacks on their homeland.

Community Leaders Demand Urgent Government Action

Local leaders expressed bitterness over the state of insecurity. They highlighted that rural populations in Benue remain highly vulnerable despite repeated government assurances. Community stakeholders are now demanding that the Federal and Benue State governments move beyond verbal condemnations. They are calling for the immediate deployment of permanent security forces to protect farming communities.

To provide immediate support, a representative from Equipping The Persecuted (ETP)—a US-based non-governmental organization—announced direct financial relief for the bereaved families. The NGO also provided funding to local vigilante groups to bolster community-led security initiatives.

A Worrying Trend of Insecurity in Otukpo

The Efeyi-Utikpi massacre occurs just weeks after a similar tragedy in neighboring Otukpo-Nobi. On July 12, eight residents were laid to rest following a comparable overnight raid, underscoring a dangerous spike in regional violence.

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has strongly condemned the latest carnage, labeling it “deadly and unprovoked.” Governor Alia has ordered state security agencies to immediately hunt down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

While the funeral prayers offered a solemn closure for the victims, fear remains high. Local farmers warn that without proactive security interventions and real justice, rural communities will continue to live in perpetual fear of the next attack.
