‘Totally Unacceptable’: Peter Obi Blocked from Entering Benue State to Visit Attack Victims
BENUE, NIGERIA — The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the Benue State government after being blocked from entering the state to condole with victims of recent terrorist attacks.
Obi was stopped by a barricade allegedly led by a special assistant to the Benue State Governor. The incident sparked immediate outrage from the opposition leader, who described the situation as a dangerous precedent for Nigerian democracy.
“We Can’t Build a Nation Like This”
Speaking on the disruption, Obi expressed deep frustration over the attempt to prevent him from showing solidarity with grieving communities. He said he was in the state to commiserate with the 200 lives that have reportedly been lost in recent violent attacks across the state.
“A state where over 200 people have lost their lives, and I cannot even condole them? I am told that youths, led by an SA to the governor, have decided to block the road,” Obi stated. “I’ve been standing here for a while thinking they’ll come to their senses. We can’t have a country like this. It doesn’t make sense to me.”
Obi Slams Governor, Warns Used Youths
Obi revealed that his visit to Abuja was public knowledge and that the ambush was entirely premeditated.
He contrasted the incident with his tenure as the governor of Anambra State, asserting that he would never have permitted such lawlessness.
“The rascality they’ve brought into this country is totally unacceptable,” Obi warned. “These youths are being used to do this, but what they’re doing now will take its revenge on them. They don’t know that. Unfortunately, somebody sits in the office and allows this to happen.”
He concluded with a passionate plea to the public: “I’m calling on Nigerians to come out and decide how we can build a country. This country belongs to all of us. These people are hungry, insecure, and need to be pulled out of poverty—that is why I came. But you can see what is happening.”
