Nigeria’s newly appointed High Commissioner to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, arrived in Johannesburg on Sunday, October 25, 2026, to officially assume his diplomatic duties amid deep bilateral strains over diaspora safety.

The former Aviation Minister, who also holds concurrent accreditation to the Kingdoms of Lesotho and Eswatini, was met with a festive, large-scale reception by senior diplomats from the Nigerian High Commission, the consulate, and representatives of the local Nigerian diaspora community.

The high-energy welcome at the airport evolved into an evening gathering at his hotel, where multiple stakeholder delegations emerged to pledge their collective support.

“We were received warmly and with so much love and excitement,” Fani-Kayode said in a statement following his arrival, noting that he was deeply humbled by the overwhelming solidarity from the community as he began his mandate.

A Delayed Strategic Deployment

Fani-Kayode’s path to Pretoria involved a strategic shift by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Initially assigned as Nigeria’s envoy to Germany earlier in the year, the presidency later redeployed him to South Africa to navigate an increasingly volatile diplomatic corridor.

The ambassador’s formal resumption follows months of standard diplomatic clearance procedures. His arrival became possible only after securing the mandatory agrément (diplomatic approval) from the host nation and officially receiving his Letters of Credence from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

Navigating a Volatile Diplomatic Climate

Fani-Kayode takes charge at a critical juncture for Nigeria–South Africa relations, which have been severely strained by escalating xenophobia, extrajudicial killings, and organized anti-migrant campaigns. The historic pan-African solidarity between Africa’s two largest economic powerhouses has increasingly shifted toward active bilateral disputes over citizen protection.
Bilateral friction spiked significantly in recent months following a wave of targeted attacks and a rising death toll among the Nigerian diaspora.

At least 12 Nigerians were confirmed murdered in South Africa, including three separate killings within a single week.

Tensions have been further exacerbated by high-stakes local friction. Vigilante groups and anti-migrant pressure movements recently issued informal ultimatums demanding that undocumented African nationals leave the country.

The resulting panic prompted safety alerts from Abuja and led the Nigerian legislature to temporarily halt official visits to South Africa.

From Vocal Critic to Chief Diplomat

Even prior to his formal resumption on South African soil, Fani-Kayode utilized his platform to issue stark, highly publicized written interventions, positioning himself as an uncompromising advocate for diaspora protection.

In public communiqués, Fani-Kayode has explicitly condemned the South African Police Service (SAPS) for what he described as heavy-handed interrogation techniques and racial profiling. He published estimates alleging that over 100 Nigerians have been killed in South Africa since 2022 by a combination of police officers and violent mobs, citing a systemic lack of successful prosecutions.

While affirming that Nigeria deeply values its historic ties with South Africa, Fani-Kayode’s previous statements carried a clear warning: long-term bilateral cooperation remains strictly contingent on the safety of Nigerian citizens and the transparent prosecution of their attackers.

With his arrival in Johannesburg, Fani-Kayode transitions from a critical long-distance commentator to Nigeria’s primary diplomat on the ground. His immediate mandate centers on turning his firm rhetoric into structural, bilateral protection mechanisms for the vulnerable Nigerian diaspora while attempting to rebuild economic cooperation between the two nations.
