PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) has activated emergency response protocols following a major gas pipeline explosion in Rivers State.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, 15 October 2026, involves a pipeline operated by the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), a subsidiary of the state oil firm. The blast took place in the Aleto community within the Eleme Local Government Area.

According to a press statement released on Friday by Andy Odeh, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Limited, the explosion resulted in injuries to residents and caused widespread damage to local businesses and residential buildings.

In the wake of the blast, NGIC emergency teams successfully isolated the affected pipeline segment to prevent further safety or environmental hazards.
The NNPC Limited confirmed it is working closely with regulatory bodies and security agencies to manage the situation.

Partners in the joint response include the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), local security agencies, and host communities.

“We are deeply concerned by reports of injuries and damage to homes and businesses,” the company statement read. “Protecting lives and preventing further harm are our immediate priorities.”

Ongoing Investigations

The exact cause of the pipeline explosion remains unknown. NNPC Limited stated that a comprehensive impact assessment is underway to determine the extent of the damage to public property, human life, and the local ecosystem.

Operational records and previous asset reports are being reviewed as part of the formal investigation to establish corrective measures.

The national oil company has urged residents of the Aleto community and the general public to stay clear of the perimeter. Displaced persons and community members are advised to follow all safety instructions issued by emergency responders on the ground.
