Police Rescue Two Colombian Women from Suspected Human Trafficking Ring in Lagos

The Nigeria Police Force has rescued two Colombian women allegedly held captive by a suspected human trafficking syndicate in Lagos following an international intelligence operation coordinated through INTERPOL.

According to police authorities, the operation was carried out by officers attached to the National Central Bureau (NCB-INTERPOL), Lagos Annex, after receiving intelligence from INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau in Bogotá on August 26, 2026.

The two victims, identified as Maria Camila Rodas Ortiz and Yuliet Fernanda Rios Mesa, were reportedly lured to Nigeria under false pretenses and later held against their will. Police said their travel documents were confiscated by suspected Chinese nationals believed to be linked to the trafficking network. The suspects are said to be at large.

“Upon receipt of the intelligence, police operatives promptly launched a covert tracking operation, locating the hideout in Lagos where both victims were safely rescued on the same day,” the police said in a state.

Authorities disclosed that the suspects fled the scene upon noticing the approaching security team. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts have been intensified to identify and apprehend all members of the syndicate.

The rescued women are currently receiving support while in protective custody. Officials also confirmed that the Colombian Embassy in Accra is collaborating with Nigerian authorities to provide accommodation and facilitate emergency travel documentation for their return to Bogotá.

According to a statement issued by CSP Ani Iniedu, Force Public Relations Officer, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to protecting residents and strengthening cooperation with international law enforcement agencies.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents within the country, while deepening collaboration with international law enforcement partners to combat cross-border crimes,” the IGP stated.
