The Olu of Warri, Ògíamẹ̀ Atúwàtse III (CFR), marked his fifth coronation anniversary with a 10-day celebration that drew dignitaries, traditional rulers, and Itsekiri sons and daughters from across Nigeria and the diaspora to Warri, Delta State.

Held under the theme “Global Homecoming,” the anniversary blended Itsekiri history and royal tradition with messages of cultural renewal, leadership, and national relevance.

Among those present were Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as well as prominent traditional rulers and chiefs who gathered at the Aghofen, the Olu’s royal palace.

A Royal Gathering at the Aghofen

Inside the palace grounds, the anniversary unfolded as both a cultural ceremony and a statement of continuity. The Aghofen became a meeting point between the ancient traditions of the Warri Kingdom and the forward-looking image the monarch has cultivated since ascending the throne.

A roar from the crowd announced the arrival of dignitaries, as government officials, chiefs, and guests moved through the palace grounds amid colourful displays of Itsekiri regalia.

Royal fathers from different parts of the country also attended, underscoring The Olu’s growing reputation as a bridge builder among traditional institutions.

The tone shifted when the royal gong sounded and Ògíamẹ̀ Atúwàtse III (CFR) emerged with Olori Atúwàtse III. Dressed in richly embroidered ceremonial robes, the monarch’s appearance reflected the pageantry and symbolism of a throne rooted in more than five centuries of history.

With a silver crown on his brow, he presented the image of a leader carrying ancestral memory while speaking to a new generation.

Culture, Worship, and a Message of Excellence

The programme moved from celebratory praise and worship to energetic traditional performances, with dancers and drummers showcasing the depth of Itsekiri cultural expression.

At the Thanksgiving Service, the monarch offered prayers and expressions of gratitude for the last five years. “We thank God for 5 years of grace, 5 years of his mercy, 5 years of his glory, 5 years of his protection, provision, and his tangible presence in our midst,” the Ògíamẹ̀ prayed. He further submitted petitions for the future: “I even want to thank him in advance for the next 5 years because by the special grace of God, everything, every single thing that we have seen in these last 5 years, is the Lord’s doing.”

For many observers, the anniversary reinforced the public image of Ògíamẹ̀ Atúwàtse III (CFR) as a monarch who embraces modernity while remaining firmly anchored in Itsekiri identity and tradition.

Regatta and Royal Legacy

Earlier, the celebration marked an exciting pitch with the return of the historic regatta, the grand finale of Bini Riva Life at Oboghoro. Boats representing different communities sailed in a colourful display of unity under the Warri crown.
