Nepal Tunnel Miracle: Two Rescued Alive After Days Trapped in Flooded Hydropower Project
KATHMANDU, Nepal — Two survivors have been pulled alive from a completely submerged section of a major Himalayan hydropower project. The dramatic breakthrough occurred on Friday, August 28, 2026, two days after a catastrophic glacier collapse triggered a tsunami-like wall of mud and rock across the China–Nepal border.
Elite Nepali Army disaster response units are working in high-risk conditions. They are utilizing helicopters and technical gear to locate approximately 100 additional workers and local residents who remain unaccounted for.
How the Disaster Unfolded
According to Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs, the disaster struck at approximately 08:40 AM on Wednesday, August 26. A sudden geological surge sent billions of gallons of icy debris tearing downstream through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.
The torrent instantly decimated the Gyirong Port border complex, a critical economic link between Nepal and Tibet. It also washed away bridges and roughly 40 kilometres of mountain roads.
The destruction of transport routes has left military airlifts as the only remaining pipeline for heavy rescue equipment and incoming emergency aid.
With the broader regional death toll surpassing 450 people and almost 1,000 still missing across both sides of the border, the survival of these two workers is being hailed as a rare miracle in an otherwise devastating week.
