Mourinho Reveals Why Real Madrid Aborted Rodri Transfer Before Barcelona Swoop
MADRID — Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has broken his silence on the summer’s biggest transfer saga, revealing exactly why Los Blancos pulled the plug on a deal for Manchester City midfielder Rodri, clearing the path for bitter rivals Barcelona.
Speaking during a high-profile official presentation on the Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, Mourinho explained that the €60 million (£65 million) blockbuster move collapsed entirely due to the player’s own hesitation.
“His Doubts Created Doubts in Me”
Mourinho detailed the internal timeline of the failed transfer, confirming he held multiple direct conversations with the Spanish international to pitch the Santiago Bernabéu project.
Despite Real Madrid presenting a highly lucrative financial package and maintaining an excellent relationship with Manchester City,
“I spoke with him a couple of times,” Mourinho admitted. “But he hesitated. His doubts created doubts in me.”
The Portuguese tactician emphasized that Real Madrid operates in a “different dimension” and will not chase players who second-guess a move to the club.
“When Real Madrid calls, a player should immediately ask, ‘When do you want me there?'” Mourinho stated firmly.
Barcelona Capitalize On Madrid Exit
Rodri’s hesitation may have been heightened by interest from arch rivals Barcelona, who moved in swiftly. The Catalan giants finalized negotiations with Manchester City, officially unveiling Rodri on a four-year contract running through June 2030 for a guaranteed base fee of €60 million.
Despite missing out on the world-class midfielder, Mourinho insisted there is no bad blood between himself and the Real Madrid board.
While noting that the transfer window remains open, the manager declared he is highly satisfied with the depth and quality of his current squad.
