…Outlines 2027 Election Roadmap as IRI Delegation Visits Abuja

ABUJA, Nigeria—The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will deploy 1.4 million ad-hoc personnel across more than 176,000 polling units nationwide for the 2027 General Election.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this during a meeting with the Pre-Election Assessment Mission (PEAM) delegation from the International Republican Institute (IRI) at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The high-level visit coincided with a critical milestone in Nigeria’s electoral calendar. It comes just three days after the Osun State off-cycle governorship election and exactly one day before the official commencement of campaigns and rallies for the 2027 general elections.

Logistics, BVAS, and Technology Upgrades

Prof. Amupitan outlined the commission’s current operational roadmap designed to guarantee seamless voting. These include voter register cleanup using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to eliminate duplicate registrations.

INEC also plans to be more punctual and expand its logistics agreements with transport unions to ensure polling locations open exactly at 8:30 a.m. nationwide.

On Election Day, the commission says it is upgrading inclusivity features to enhance polling unit access along with the deployment of specialized assistive devices for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), pregnant women, nursing mothers, and elderly voters.

Proven Tech Performance

The commission explained to the delegation that the recent off-cycle elections in Ekiti and Osun served as operational stress tests for its Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal, as both achieved data upload rates of above 98%.

Despite this technological progress, the INEC Chairman identified insecurity and localized electoral violence, vote-buying and financial inducement, hate speech, and targeted disinformation as major threats to the 2027 general elections.

However, Prof. Amupitan reaffirmed INEC’s absolute neutrality in the upcoming cycle. “INEC holds no preference for any political party or candidate,” Amupitan stated. “Our mandate remains the delivery of a free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive election reflecting the will of Nigerians.”

International Community Pledges Support

The head of the IRI delegation, Ambassador Dan Twining, commended INEC for its successful conduct of the 2026 Osun State governorship election. He praised Nigerian citizens for their ongoing commitment to democracy.

Ambassador Twining stated that the international community wants to support Nigeria’s electoral framework, noting that the team is assessing early planning, forecasts, and potential concerns to ensure a peaceful and credible democratic process.
