2027 Elections: Let’s Behave Decently—President Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has called for decency in politics as the campaign season for the 2027 general elections kicks off.
The President made the comment at the signing of the National Peace Accord took place at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, on Tuesday evening.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the President acknowledged the role of members of the National Peace Committee (NPC), particularly General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, in suing for wholesome political engagements in the election season.
The President charged members of the political class to abide by the spirit of the accord. “We must conduct ourselves in ways that strengthen—not tear—the fabric of our society,” he stated.
He acknowledged that disagreements are normal but should not be allowed to descend into conflict. “It is natural during campaigns to disagree as opponents and advocate competing governing visions for our country. We may exchange occasional political jabs. But as members of the same household, the same national family, we must never resort to divisive or primordial sentiments of ethnicity or religion as tools for seeking power,” the President warned.
He concluded by appealing for a campaign focused on superior ideas, debates that promote issues, and alternative policies that will expand opportunities for citizens as well as accelerate Nigeria’s journey from a developing nation to a first-world country.
