Germany’s Far-Right AfD Vows Mass Deportations After Historic State Election Win

Alice Weidel, co-leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has vowed to implement radical immigration reforms—including sealing borders and launching mass deportations—following a historic victory in Sunday’s state elections.

Speaking after the party secured a landmark win in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, September 6, 2026, Weidel outlined aggressive plans to halt immigration and remove undocumented residents if the party forms a national government.

The AfD secured a record-breaking 44% of the vote. The result deals a severe blow to Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which trailed distantly in second place with approximately 17%.

A Historic Milestone Facing a Political Firewall

The landslide victory marks a major milestone for the AfD, more than doubling its 20.8% result from the 2021 election in Saxony-Anhalt. State lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund declared that the party is on course to “make history.”

However, despite the massive wave of support, the AfD is projected to fall short of the 42-seat absolute majority required to govern alone. Current projections show the party capturing 39 out of 83 seats in the state parliament.

Because mainstream German political parties maintain a strict “firewall” policy—refusing to enter coalitions or collaborate with the AfD due to its classification as a right-wing extremist organization—forming a stable state government will present a severe challenge for the heavily fractured centrist parties.

Agenda for the Future National Government

Although Germany’s next federal election is not scheduled until 2029, Weidel used the victory to lay out the party’s national governing agenda.

“We have a plan for Germany which we will begin to implement within the first 100 days of joining the government,” Weidel told a roaring crowd. “We will seal the borders completely and turn away anyone who enters the country illegally or without documents. We will send a very clear message to the world that Germany’s borders are closed.”

Weidel also announced harsh new measures targeting asylum seekers. The proposed policies include swapping cash benefits for in-kind provisions and completely eliminating social benefits for anyone lacking legal residency status.

However, the party’s most controversial stance remains its sweeping deportation policy. “We will carry out mass deportations,” Weidel told party members amid thunderous applause. “And I have to be very honest with you: if that is going to be called remigration, then that is what it will be called—remigration.”
