The Justice Ministry of Liberia has leveled drug trafficking and money laundering charges against its former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor.
Jewel is the former wife of ex-Liberian leader Charles Taylor, who was convicted in 2012 on 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity by the Special Court for Sierra Leone (sitting in The Hague). He is currently serving a 50-year prison sentence.
Jewel Howard-Taylor is said to have allegedly imported illegal substances and facilitated a drug trafficking ring.
She served as VP in former President George Weah’s government until 2024, when the administration was ousted in an election won by current president Joseph Boakai.
