Diphtheria: Plateau Government Reopens Schools, Sets Monday Resumption

The Plateau State Government has ordered the reopening of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state, effective Monday, September 14, 2026.

The decision follows a brief shutdown to evaluate and manage a sudden diphtheria scare in parts of the state. According to officials, strict public health protocols are now in place to safeguard students and staff as they resume the 2026/2027 academic session.

Enhanced Safety Measures for School Resumption

In an official statement, the Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Ramnap, explained that the reopening aligns with the administration’s commitment to maintaining educational continuity without compromising public safety.

The government has introduced key measures to minimize the risk of transmission. These include mandatory surveillance by school administrators who must closely monitor students and immediately report any child exhibiting symptoms of diphtheria.

Authorities have also ordered heightened hygiene measures. while state health teams have been mandated to remain active within communities to track and handle potential health concerns proactively.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Health, Nicholas Baamlong, affirmed that his ministry is working alongside basic education institutions to strengthen disease surveillance and ensure suspect cases are treated safely and efficiently.

Background: The One-Week Diphtheria Shutdown

The Plateau State government had previously ordered an emergency, temporary closure of all basic education schools starting Monday, September 7, 2026.

The precautionary lockdown was triggered by detected clusters of suspected diphtheria infections across four high-risk Local Government Areas of Jos North, Jos South, Bassa, and Wase.

The one-week suspension provided state medical teams with the necessary window to conduct field assessments, map transmission vectors, and reinforce local health infrastructures before allowing children back into classrooms.

Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection that can cause severe respiratory issues, making crowded environments like schools a primary focus for public health interventions.
