UZERE, NIGERIA — A rights group, the Porb Justice and Development Initiative (PJDI), has launched a formal intervention following a damaging oil and gas spill at Well 14 in the Uzere Community of Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State.

The advocacy group is calling for immediate containment, an independent investigation, and swift environmental remediation to protect the livelihoods of the affected host community.

Watchdogs Petitioned Over Well 14 Spill

In a press statement issued on August 6, 2026, PJDI revealed it has officially petitioned major regulatory bodies and the field operator to demand swift, transparent action.

The group has formally written to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA; and Heritage Energy which is the corporate operator managing the asset

According to the initiative, the immediate priority must focus on establishing facts, stopping any ongoing discharge, assessing the ecological footprint, and delivering justice to the community.

Prioritizing Evidence and Due Process

Despite the growing frustration of local residents, PJDI stated that its current intervention does not aim to pre-judge liability or assign blame before official facts emerge.

Philip O. Orbih, a human rights consultant and the Founder and Executive Director of PJDI, said the demand is simply a matter of environmental accountability.

According to him, “Our objective is to ensure that the incident is properly investigated, affected areas are appropriately remediated, and legitimate community concerns are addressed.”

The group emphasized that sustainable solutions in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions require deep cooperation between host communities, operators, and regulatory agencies.

Next Steps for Uzere Community

The organization stated it is prepared to launch further independent fact-finding missions and lawful advocacy campaigns to guarantee compliance with Nigerian environmental laws.
