Post-Split Relations: ECOWAS and AES Set Up Technical Groups to Negotiate Future Ties
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) have officially laid the groundwork for future diplomatic and economic cooperation during a ministerial dialogue in Dakar, Senegal.
Meeting on October 17, 2026, delegations from both blocs agreed to establish joint thematic working groups to conduct technical exchanges. The ultimate goal of these technical groups is to draft and finalize a comprehensive cooperation framework agreement that balances the mutual interests of their respective populations.
The high-level session serves as a crucial bridge following initial consultations held in Bamako, Mali, in May 2025. Co-chaired by both delegations, the meeting focused on identifying shared strategic interests and easing regional fragmentation.
According to the joint communiqué released at the conclusion of the session, future relations between ECOWAS and the AES will be strictly guided by the principles of respect for sovereignty and national dignity, good neighborliness across borders, and the overall socio-economic well-being of West African citizens.
The newly formed technical working groups will immediately begin structuring the cooperation framework. Their findings and technical results are scheduled to be submitted for ministerial review ahead of the next formal session.
