Ethiopia Appoints Caretaker Government in Tigray for Upcoming Elections

Ethiopia has established a caretaker government for its northern Tigray region ahead of regional elections scheduled within the next six months, according to Reuters.

This administrative overhaul follows a dramatic escalation in violence after a rebel alliance led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) launched a major offensive last month against the federal government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The renewed fighting has shattered a fragile peace and reignited a devastating conflict that originally plagued the country between 2020 and 2022, a war that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and triggered a massive humanitarian crisis.

The latest surge in hostilities has also caused a severe diplomatic rift in the Horn of Africa, completely severing ties between Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea.

Officials in Addis Ababa have accused Asmara of providing military and strategic backing to the Tigrayan rebels. Eritrea has strongly denied these allegations, though the cross-border tensions threaten to further destabilize the wider region.
