A severe storm has triggered a widespread blackout across several communities in Nasarawa State and its surrounding areas.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) announced that the prolonged power outage affecting Masaka, Keffi, Akwanga, and Nasarawa is due to a massive infrastructure failure caused by extreme weather conditions.

The disruption began at approximately 4:06 PM on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, when heavy rainfall and destructive, strong winds swept through the region. The severe weather led to the tripping of the 132 kV Apo-Karu-Keffi-Akwanga transmission line.

Subsequent field investigations revealed that the storm caused the physical collapse of three critical transmission towers—specifically Towers T78, T79, and T80—situated along the Karu-Keffi-Akwanga circuit.

To safely facilitate emergency repairs and isolate the damage, technical crews have completely shut down the line. Consequently, all 33kV outgoing feeders at the Keffi and Akwanga substations are currently offline, temporarily cutting off bulk electricity supply to local households and businesses.

According to a statement by the AEDC, a specialized technical team from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has already been deployed to the site. “Engineering crews are working around the clock to reconstruct the collapsed towers, clear the structural faults, and safely restore grid connectivity,” AEDC stated.

The management of AEDC expressed its deepest regrets over the severe inconvenience caused by the unexpected blackout.

The distribution utility reassured residents that full electricity supply will be restored immediately after TCN finishes structural reconstruction and safely re-energizes the high-voltage transmission lines.
