ABUJA — The opposition camp is firing back at President Bola Tinubu’s latest economic intervention.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially rejected the government’s proposed 30-day fuel discount at NNPC stations, calling it a desperate political gimmick.

Through his campaign spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku slammed the timing of the intervention on October 8, 2026, linking it directly to the looming elections.

Atiku warns that after the 30-day countdown ends, citizens will immediately face the same brutal transport fares and food costs.
He questioned the transparency in the plan, arguing that the government has not stated how much motorists will actually save per litre.

The ADC presidential candidate also faulted the administrative deployment of the discount scheme, saying it is heavily restricted to NNPC stations, leaving out a massive segment of commuters and independent fuel stations.

According to Atiku, the sudden shift proves that the government’s previous claims that market relief was impossible to implement were false.

He reiterated his own economic proposal for capped, budgeted production support for locally refined fuel to deliver permanent relief to Nigerian households.
