Ondo Toxic Drink Crisis: Death Toll Hits 29 as Health Officials Enforce Total Ban

A tragic health crisis is unfolding in Ondo State, where the death toll from suspected toxic local drinks has now jumped to 29 people.

Health officials have also flagged 60 suspected cases in the Odigbo Local Government Area, sparking an urgent state-wide response.

Ondo State Health Commissioner, Dr. Banji Ajaka, shared the worrying update over the weekend during a press briefing in Akure.

What We Know So Far

Right now, three patients are actively receiving treatment at local healthcare centers, while another 27 people are being closely watched by medical teams.

This crisis is overwhelmingly impacting younger and middle-aged men. Roughly 95% of the victims are male, with ages spanning from 16 to 55 years old.

Medical teams have collected 36 biological samples—mostly blood and urine—and sent them to the lab. Scientists are working around the clock to figure out exactly what chemical or toxin is causing these sudden deaths.

Immediate Crackdown on Local Brews

To stop the tragedy from spreading, Commissioner Ajaka reiterated that there is an absolute ban on producing or selling any locally brewed alcohol or herbal drinks in the Odigbo area.

The government is also calling on community leaders, youth heads, and local residents to keep their eyes open.
