Nasarawa State Partners on 150MW Power Project and Clean Energy Shift
LAFIA, NIGERIA — Nasarawa State in north-central Nigeria has committed to a major clean energy initiative designed to eliminate charcoal dependency, introduce electric mobility, and inject 150 megawatts of electricity into Nasarawa State.
Speaking during a Sustainable Energy Access Project presentation in Lafia, Governor Abdullahi Sule emphasized that while Nasarawa has strong developmental plans, the ultimate success of the project relies entirely on strict implementation and enforcement.
Transitioning from Charcoal to Affordable Gas
Despite existing state restrictions on charcoal production, the practice remains widespread across local communities. To counter this environmental challenge, the state plans to introduce natural gas as a cleaner, cheaper alternative to firewood, charcoal, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Governor Sule noted that community adoption depends heavily on economic visibility, stressing that residents must experience real, direct cost savings before completely shifting their domestic energy habits.
To ensure the transition moves forward, the clean cooking programme aims to target 20,000 households across every Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa.
150MW Electricity Boost for Industrial Mining
Addressing the state’s power infrastructure, Governor Sule revealed a strategic partnership with Tetracom to generate an initial 150 megawatts of electricity. This supply accounts for roughly half of Nasarawa’s total estimated power requirements.
The transmission route will link through the Abaji area, with a dedicated power substation planned for Toto to drive local mining and industrial activities.
Governor Sule expressed strong optimism regarding these upcoming transmission grid upgrades, noting they are vital to reducing distribution losses and securing a stable supply for consumers.

E-Mobility and Carbon Financing Goals
Brian Omonu, CEO of Data Analytics and Solutions, detailed that the Sustainable Energy Access Project operates on three core pillars: clean cooking, electric mobility, and grid optimization.
The e-mobility phase will actively focus on converting petrol-powered tricycles (Keke) and motorcycles into electric vehicles.
According to Habiba Suleiman, Director-General of the Nasarawa State Human Capital Development Agency, this aligns with a broader 10-year state roadmap. The strategy aims to impact one million homes annually—reaching 10 million homes over a decade—to lower carbon emissions, improve public health, and position Nasarawa to access global carbon financing.
Governor Sule has directed all relevant state ministries, technical personnel, and agencies to integrate immediately with the project developers to move the proposals out of the boardroom and into active field implementation.
