La Liga Review: Barcelona Thump Alaves 6-1 to Reclaim Top Spot Ahead of Atletico Clash
After two consecutive defeats, Barcelona returned to winning ways with a commanding 6-1 demolition of Deportivo Alaves to reclaim the top spot in La Liga.
The visitors showed flashes of momentum early in the first half, but the hosts soon took full control.
Barcelona stormed into a dominant lead with four first-half goals, courtesy of a Raphinha brace alongside strikes from Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal.
Yamal extended the lead in the second half to complete his own brace. Substitute Anthony Gordon then capped off the brilliant team performance with a solo effort, finishing a superb pass from Rodri.
Rodri later turned from provider to villain, committing a poor back-pass that allowed Mariano Diaz to score a late consolation goal for Alaves.
The victory takes Barcelona back to the summit of La Liga with 30 points out of a possible 33. The Catalan giants displaced Atletico Madrid, who had temporarily taken the top spot following a 2-0 away win at Levante. Diego Simeone’s men now sit just two points behind Barcelona.
Both sides are set to face off next weekend in a highly anticipated battle for undisputed control of the league table.
In Saturday’s other La Liga fixtures, Real Betis edged out Malaga 2-1, while Rayo Vallecano earned a comfortable 3-0 victory over Celta Vigo.
La Liga action resumes on Sunday with a packed schedule starting with Getafe hosting Sevilla, followed by Real Madrid travelling to Racing Santander. Elche will also square off against Valencia, before the highly anticipated Basque derby closes out the day when Athletic Club hosts Real Sociedad.
