LAGOS—The Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation (GAFAMORG) and the National Coalition Against Mass Killings, Extra-Judicial Killings, Mob Action, and Impunity (NCAMKI) have urged the Federal Government to declare September 5 as a National Day of Remembrance.

The civil society groups made the call on Saturday in Lagos during the 17th annual Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Lecture. The designated day would honour thousands of Nigerians who have lost their lives to insurgency, kidnapping, and state impunity across the country.

This year’s lecture, themed “Democracy, Human Dignity, and the Nigerian State: Living Wage, Security, and Accountability in the Public Interest,” served as a platform for activists to demand immediate government intervention regarding the nation’s security and economic challenges.

Speaking at the event, organizers emphasized that officially recognizing the victims of violent crimes is a critical step toward healing and achieving national accountability. They urged the administration to address the root causes of insecurity while ensuring justice for affected families.
