Edo Govt Takes Custody of Pregnant 14-Year-Old Defending Her Father
BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — The Edo State Government has taken custody of a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly impregnated by her biological father, officials confirmed on Friday.
The victim, who is currently eight months pregnant, is being shielded by the state to ensure her safety and medical care.
Victim Defends Biological Father
The Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugenia Abdallah, disclosed the development during the August monthly joint briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and Strategy in Benin City.
According to Abdallah, the teenager has actively refused to reveal her father’s current whereabouts. The refusal stems from fears that he will face immediate arrest and criminal prosecution.
The Commissioner further noted that the minor is receiving comprehensive psychological support, as cases involving family members often require specialized trauma-informed care.
Child Protection Efforts in Edo State
The case is part of a larger effort by the state to address safety concerns for young people. Commissioner Abdallah reported that the ministry has documented over 72 cases involving the welfare of minors in the past seven months.
In response to these figures, the Edo State Government is implementing several measures to strengthen the protection of children. These include institutional support through the provision of safe housing and rehabilitation services for children in vulnerable situations.
Efforts are also being put in place to promote legal advocacy, ensure the strict application of the Child Rights Law, and hold offenders accountable and deter future incidents, as well as increase community awareness and engagements.
The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development says it will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure that all children in the state have access to a safe and secure environment.
