Congo Ebola Outbreak Escalates: Death Toll Hits 1,707 as Community Spread Surges

KINSHASA, DRC — The devastating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to intensify, with official figures revealing 3,802 recorded cases and 1,707 deaths.

According to the Associated Press (AP), health officials are warning that the trajectory of the virus remains highly unpredictable.

Speaking during his second visit to Bunia—a major town located near the epicenter of the outbreak—Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya confirmed that the peak of the crisis remains unknown.

In a worrying development, Kaseya revealed that nearly 80% of newly detected Ebola cases are originating from unmonitored community transmission rather than established contact tracing lists. This data indicates that the virus is spreading silently and undetected outside of known containment networks.

The escalating crisis has drawn urgent international intervention. World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is arriving in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa today to assess the situation.
